Do you find yourself wondering how we ended up on this god forsaken timeline of political folly, billionaire debauchery and absurdist techno fascism??? Well, we invite you to join ENTRE on Saturday July 4th for a special program that will melt what’s left of your brain after hours of doom scrolling and the 24 hour news cycle…and leave you inspired to build a better world.

Stick around after to gather your brain goo and participate in a post-screening discussion about a post-border world, abolition and the fall of the american empire facilitated by C. Díaz and Yasmine Gonzalez.

Hello Dankness is a political fable that chronicles the psychotropic vibe shift in US politics from 2016 to 2021. Larping as a suburban stoner musical, the film follows a young Tom Hanks and his neighbors as consensus reality disintegrates into conspiracies and other contagions. What unfolds is a rogue retelling of history in which hotdogs debate the culture wars, trashcans preach QAnon, zombies rally for revolution, and real events are refashioned as Broadway bangers from Cats, Les Miserables, Annie, and The Phantom of the Opera. By preserving the mythologies that composed the post-2016 moment, Hello Dankness traces how the internets memetic sensibility metastasized into American political consciousness, and Trump became the first meme to take office in The White House.

Created prior to the introduction of generative AI, Soda Jerk make extensive use of frame-by-frame rotoscoping and VFX to construct the film’s classical narrative from over one thousand film, television and audio samples. Premiering at the Berlinale in 2023, Hello Dankness went on to receive numerous cinema awards and critical acclaim, including 4 and 5 start reviews from The Guardian and Time Out Magazine. The film began its cinema release with an extended run at New York’s iconic Film Forum followed by theatrical releases in Australia and the UK.

About the artists:

Soda Jerk make sample-based films with a rogue documentary impulse. They are fundamentally interested in the politics of images; how they circulate, whom they benefit and how they can be undone. Their feature film Hello Dankness premiered at the Berlinale in 2023 and has received numerous cinema awards including Best Narrative Feature at the Atlanta Film Festival and the Blackmagic Design Australian Innovation Award. Its theatrical release included an extended run at Film Forum in New York. Hello Dankness followed Soda Jerk’s controversial political revenge fable Terror Nullius (2018), which was disowned by its commissioning body who called the film “UnAustralian”. The Guardian named the “dizzyingly ambitious satirical work” one of the best Australian movies of the decade.

Soda Jerk’s videos have been exhibited internationally at film festivals and art institutions including the Centre Pompidou, Moderna Museet, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, the Whitworth, Barbican, Chisenhale Gallery, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Hartware MedienKunstVerein, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, National Gallery of Art Washington DC, Wexner Center for the Arts, Walker Arts Center, Museum of the Moving Image NYC, Pioneer Works, Seoul Museum of Art, Video Bureau Guangzhou, Tai Kwun Contemporary Hong Kong, the British Film Institute and Anthology Film Archives.
